You've got to be kidding me. When I saw the ad I couldnt believe my ears. "Have a happy period"???? Give me a break. There is nothing happy about a period. Maybe you can make it "tolerable"...but not happy. This had to have been formulated by men who in their wildest imaginations could never have any idea what its like to have monthly pain, bloating, PMS....you name it...for 40 years!!!!! The only thing happy about a period is the day its over.

I am doing some research on this particular ad and was wondering what the name of the font used in the tag line?

Hi Jennifer,
Nice to hear from you and great to see that you're keeping up with Toxic Shock. And thank you for a female perspective! Let me know how things are going.

Here's a female perspective! ;)

I agree with David. It's gonna offend some women. I'm on the fence about it myself... the product's fine, no problems with that whatsoever, but if they tell me to "Have a Happy Period," I'm wondering who made the ad, and if they themselves have happy periods. (Hey, Always, do you?) It makes me begin to feel PMS-y all over again.

If there was a way for them to keep the upbeat, otherwise empowering message, without demanding I have a happy period, I'd be ok. It's just such a personal and intimate thing, I don't want P&G telling me that it should be happy or otherwise.

I'm curious to think what other women's thoughts are.

Yes, good point. Also being a man I probably would have left this one entirely alone if I had not done that 5 year brand management stint on o.b., carefree and Stayfree.

My thought is that some women would like this tagline but a lot would hate it. And Always is too universal a brand to be able to exclude the many for the few.

But your points are well taken.

I'm not a woman ~ never have been and, with some degree of confidence, never will be ;-)

That said, I like the P&G Always ad and respect its upbeat tone. To me, it's not so much a literal promise as a lofty aspiration: women are empowered to believe that menstruation *might* not be the worst thing in the world. I'll defer to my wife if that thought is truly credible, but I think it's reasonable.

In any case, here's the online complement to this Always television ad. It's not radically different in tone or content. On-strategy to a fault, it repeats the tagline that caught David's attention ("Have a happy period. Always.") and will probably annoy him further.

Needless to say, we need a female perspective here. Women, what say you? Does the tagline ruin the ad, reinforce the message, or play no role at all?
