Comment on COMMENTARY: Walmart Adds an Asterisk by Mike Mirkil

I'm not a Walmart fan by any means, but don't underestimate them.

I see this new logo as a "kinder, gentler" Walmart that is attempting to be perceived as friendlier.

I do agree that the new tagline dilutes their incredibly strong "Always Low Prices" position, however.

The bottom line is that Walmart is here to stay. They are the behemoth oil-tanker that takes forever to change direction but they are doing it. Take for instance the green movement and one small example: organic cotton. Walmart is now (I believe) the largest purchaser in the world of organic cotton. Their scale and market strength is frightening.

You must mean those subject lines that go something like this:

YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS HAVE BEEN FROZEN DUE TO SUSPICOUS ACTIVITY - PLEASE CLICK ON THE LINE BELOW AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS TO HAVE THIS MATTER RESOLVED - BUT DON'T WORRY, I WILL PAY YOU 45% OF $180,000,000 USD IF YOU WILL ALLOW ME TO SEND THESE FUNDS TO YOU FROM MY BANK IN NIGERIA - BY THE WAY, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE SOME PICTURES OF ME HAVING SEX WITH AN ALIEN - I READ YOUR MARKETING BLOG AND IT REALLY GOT ME HOT! HOT! HOT!

************************************************************

Uh, yes. I've been finding these subject lines quite entertaining. But I don't seem to be buying anything because of them.

But you make a good point. Some of these spammers are working pretty hard to come up with some good copy. I've been thinking about this myself.

I can definitely see a rebranding strategy failing for Walmart*. I think with the bad economy in the US, it is actually a really poor decision to position yourself as a store that sells mid-price items. People really do want low low prices during this time of hardship, and are willing to forgo a lot of the "lifestyle" type products in favor of the bread and butter git er done! mentality.

I think it is clear from not only this campaign but other companies campaigns that brands do segment it products between diet and non-diet to give themselves the opportunity of branding what are very similar products in entirely different ways.

Is there any website where one can comment on current ads - mainly tv - but others too - any ad one wants to critique? So many of them drive me up the wall, most are asinine, but once in a while a good one somehow slips through the cracks. Is there anywhere one can share opinions? Please get back to me ... I'd really appreciate it.

Not only is their advertising below standard, everything about this mart is below standard, from conception all the way up. There were few occasions where I wandered in to give it another chance.....and it never fails, every time is a bad experience. I will never ever ever go through their doors again, regardless of location. Speaking of location, there is a relatively new location on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Atlanta (Chamblee)...and speaking of below standard, WOW. I was there only once but observed absolute filth, a bathroom with feces spread from one side to the other, a handicap stall with a paper dispenser that cannot be reached without almost falling to the floor. Customers come with entire family and spread across the isles and allow their children to grab items to play with that get dropped and left on the floor ..who can possible scoot in and scoot out to pick up anything without losing time. It seems that Wal*Mart attracts many undesirables, not only those who are in need of a discount, but where are the discounts? Who needs one in every neighborhood just to see the areas progressively decay? Now I understand Wal*Mart wants to CHANGE IT'S LOGO TO SEND A MORE FRIENDLY MESSAGE, or something like that. Why cannot their executives and substandard advertising nongeniuses just simply understand that most of the population is growing tired of Wal*Mart and its trash.

I'm also considering using a specialized copywriting software called Glyphius. Has anyone had any experience with this? It is supposed to use statistical analysis to optimize the wording of your advertising copy. I'd be interested in hearing any feedback, good or bad. Thanks

Though brand association to a huge, trusted name like Disney may seem like an asset, it is sometimes a card left best unplayed. Parents may be hesitant to hand the duty of child-rearing off to a Fortune 500 Co, particularly given today's corporate-media-wary public.

with all due respect, this is a very naive assumption.
people of all ages find this hilarious because they
can lighten up and enjoy life. i prefer more advanced
humor like the daily show or the Colbert report but
this is a well directed advertisement that has got axe
selling everywhere to cover up the scent of sweat,
alcohol, and weed for teenagers like most of the children
of people reading this with now. i'm not the typical boob
of society either. i think drinking is for filth anyways, regardless of age.
we just have to accept that these people do exist and make up
the population of: God Bless America.

I see your point with the way they switched gears on this marketing campaign, however, I still found the commercials to be entertaining. LeBron James isn't an actor by any means but he can still be humorous which he proved when he hosted SNL. Nike should stick to their original marketing but I doubt these commercials they have done with LeBron has swayed the consumer's opinion on Nike by very much. I am a loyal Nike buyer because I like the shoes and I think there are many people who feel the same.
