GG,

You are absolutely right. The Fusion is the best razor on the market, but it's tough to say whether it is worth the money. It feels like a marketing hostage dilemma. P&G just better hope that somebody else doesn't come in with a 90% solution for 25% of the price.

I just found your blog re: the Gilette Fusion razor. Here's what a guy that shaves and uses it has to say about it:

I love it -- truly -- it does give me the closest shave out of any razor I've used in the past (and I've used them all). I've used the M3, Quattro, Sensor, Atra and more. The Fusion rates the best for comfort and close shave. But beyond this, there's one other thing the Fusion has that NONE of the other brands have: A SINGLE BLADE ON THE TOP THAT YOU CAN USE TO BORDER A GOATEE, BEARD OR MOUSTACHE. Did you ever try to shave close to your goatee with a 4 or 5 blade razor. You can't! FINALLY someone had the brainstorm to include a single blade for such tasks with the multi-blade cartridge. This aspect of the Fusion is BARELY marketed, and I really think if more guys with some facial hair knew about it, their sales would increase even more. Why don't the other brands play copycat with this feature???

But it's a love-hate relationship I have with the Fusion, I'm afraid, because I absolutely HATE the cost of the cartridges. It's insane to pay over $20 for a pack of 8 replacement cartridges, or more than $15 for a pack of 4. And what's with the "lasts over 3 months" that appears on the replacement packs of 4?? In their dreams!! The Fusion cartridges give me two good shaves each -- by #3, it'll start pulling and dragging and I know it's time for a new cartridge. Plus, the lubricant strip is almost completely dissolved after two uses, so I have no idea how they can say a pack of 4 replacement cartridges will last a person over 3 months. That's a boldface lie.

One other thing that bugs me -- exactly what IS the difference between the Fusion Manual and the Fusion Power cartridges (besides price). Yea, the Fusion Power razor has a battery in it that makes the thing vibrate and must make some fool think they are getting a closer shave with a buzzing razor, but when I look at the manual and power cartridges side by side - I see no difference except for the coloring at the bottom. It just makes me think they play on the whole "power" thing as giving you something the manual cannot and consequently, you have to pay more for it.

I wish I didn't like the Fusion - I hate spending this kind of dough for razor blades. But darn it, I like a close shave AND I like have the single blade available for up close edging. My goatee has never looked this good. I'll have the best trimmed goatee out of all the guys at the homeless shelter.

[...] There is a certain trepidation that a critic feels when challenging a huge brand. Especially when that brand has just been validated by the one of the largest and most successful brand factories. But such was the case last September when we challenged Gillette Fusion and the pricing and product strategy behind this new razor. This month in BusinessWeek, our challenge was validated by Robert Berner and William Symonds.
There was a time when on sharp blade could give you a great shave. Now it takes 5 dull blades to give you that same shave.

I wonder what the demographic is. This HAS to be targetted at 20 somethings on the pull, the desire involved has to be to do with sexual charm and work prospects.
Its a vanity purchase, a frivolous spend ie a waste of money, and heaven knows its the single workers that are best at those.
People can't be led by the nose unless they are willing to bend over.
