The analysis is correct and I am an example. Since reading this article, I have stopped shopping at K-Mart and go to Target instead.

Toad,

Yes, it is amazing. It shows the huge danger in only paying attention to what you can easily measure. Kmart does not seem to understand some of the key elements that go into making loyal customers - and particularly how well disaffected customers communicate to one another.

Hey David.
Interesting post-- I had the same take on the story as you did and have a similar (though not as detailed) post on my blog, The Toad Stool.

The bottom line is Kmart is sending out a clear message that the customer comes last and that they intend to treat their customers like criminals. Because there's no reason the cashier couldn't have merely pointed out that the shoes were in the wrong box saving Kmart and Landro the hassle and embarassment.

The fact that, as you point out, corporate Kmart and their PR team did not apologize once Landro approached them and told them her story, but rather continued to make her feel like a criminal is nothing short of mind-boggling.

I find it interesting that Ms. Landro bough over $80o dollars of merchandise and yet someone thought she was trying to save a few bucks on just 1 item, flipflops. Whoever that is should probably get it together.
