I think the fiesta movement got lots of attention, but it will have faded by the time the car is actually available in the US

It's one of the more creative thoughtful integrated campaigns I've seen from an automaker. I had a chance to speak with the publicist and met one of the filmmakers/ambassadors. Crayon did a fantastic job and hats off to Ford for trying a new approach. Please keep us posted on the Ford's return once launched

I owned a 78 Ford Fiesta for 2 years.
It was my first car, and I loved it.
I got it in 1988, 10 years after it was built, but had alot of fun driving it.
The engine was a 1.6, and was more than likely equally as fun to drive as the 2011 Fiesta will be.
That little engine was torqey and the transmission was geared perfectly.
Got no less than 28 Mpg, and did mid 30s on the hwy, had reasonable handling, and was easy to maintain.
Bad things:
Electrical was old european (VW comes to mind for me) with the old plastic fuses with a piece of metal on them.
I replaced several and found the panel flexing was what caused them to break, or melt.
Very thin body sheet metal, no airbags, no power brakes (unless you bought a Ghia available in 1980) and no powersteering or ABS.
These cars were BASIC..
The plastic in the interior wasnt very durable resulting in snapped door handles and knobs etc etc.
Crank windows, no power locks or mirrors..
Wow.. thinking about this, All I had was a 4 speed manual transmission, a great engine and a small shell around me and a clamshell hood and usable rear hatch along with 2 doors and 12 inch rims!
I loved this car though, seriously.
It wasnt great to look at, but it was mine, cheap to own and maintain and really, was pretty reliable all the cheap bits considered.
It was a mistake for me to ever sell this car.
Ok, some words about the 2011 Fiesta.
I hope it doesnt get decontented and maintains its European flair.
Im expecting some bumper modifications (probably up front) maybe a gear change in 5th for the manuals to a slightly taller gear.
What Im HOPING will improve:
A better cubby by the ebrake for more secure storage of small items such as the insanely popular iphone, Ipod and other MP3s.
A temp gauge, why isnt this there? Can you use the center display to post engine temp AND outside temp?
A different placement of the window switches by moving forward alittle.
Make power rear windows STANDARD?
This isnt the 80s or a post 2000 Dodge NEON.
PLEASE carpet the back of the rear seats.. The metal back looks cheap and I know those scratches are going to look like crap FAST.
An RS model with a turbo and im sold.
Add these simple detail improvements and this car will sell like hotcakes.
I dont believe the name will weigh this car down mainly due to most people dont even know what a "Fiesta" is/was.
Most people know a "Fiesta" as a Celebration.. like the 4th of July is here.
Sounds pretty positive right?
Others know the name "Fiesta" today by being sold in Europe for over 30 years isnt going to stifle sales one bit here the US.
The Fiesta was a "cheap" car back in the late 70s into 1980 here in the US but it was NOT a piece of crap.
The early Escort was built better than the Fiesta it replaced only in body but it was also plagued with a bad engine that couldnt hold a candle to a Fiesta 1.6 reliablitywise.
In fact, they shared a couple components.. (mostly fuel/ignition related), but thats where the similarities ended.
No fun handling, no personality..boring as could be.
I guess what im trying to say is the Fiesta wasnt that bad of a car all in all and did several things right.
The 2011 Fiesta is a marvelous car, that if tweaked a bit, can be stunning and will be an unbelivable seller.
I think Ford is taking all this data with the Fiesta movement, and getting everyones take on the car.
So far, its been hugely positive and with people thinking smaller,im thinking that this car will be a home run for Ford.
As long Ford doesnt pull a European Mercur/Scorpio/Contour/Mystic/Cougar, build em for a couple years and pull the plug.
Also, Ford, PLEASE.. Keep this car at least 4 model years and tweak yearly.
Keep the "Premium" but keep "Value" in the same sentence.

I give kudos to Ford for bringing a more up-to-date European design over to fill a niche it was not previously filling. The only thing I wonder about is naming it the Fiesta. I vaguely remember the original Ford Fiesta, and I can’t remember anyone who had good words about it. I think naming it the Fiesta is probably going to do more to weight the new model down with the negative connotations and baggage of the previous Fiesta and offset some of the advantage of basically introducing a new model and class to the line. That’s my two cents, anyway.

Good move by Ford. Perhaps more automakers should get on board with these types of campaigns.
